RASPBERRIES! Rewind’s resident song-and-dance man Patrick continues his quest to get the gang to appreciate his love of musical cinema with George Roy Hill’s 1968 Roaring Twenties-set comedy extravaganza Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Fresh off a run of world-conquering hits including Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews plays the titular Millie, a young woman in the big city looking to stake her place in this newly liberated era by going out and finding herself a job – although, only so she can marry her boss and take up a life of wifely duties. Into her single women’s hotel breezes aspiring actress Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore), whom Millie takes under her wing. Also appearing suddenly is the nerdy but spirited Jimmy (James Fox), whom Millie begins an on–off flirtation with while she tries to find her wealthy Mr Right. But when young women start going missing from the hotel, a farcical whodunnit interrupts the gaudy Jazz Age proceedings.
Will Patrick’s 2nd attempt to introduce some showtune pep into the podcast finally break through to the whimsy-averse remaining hosts Gali, Devlin and Matt? Or will Millie’s end-of-an-era spectacle have them longing for the advent of the rapidly oncoming New Hollywood revolution that consigned this type of cinema to the scrapheap for a couple of decades? Toss your curls and cares away, throw on your beads and fling those jazz hands as we find out!
